GARRY IN CHRISTINE LAVIN'S NEW BOOK!
This just in: I've been immortalized in print! Singer/songwriter and folk institution Christine Lavin has written a book about her life called: "Cold Pizza for Breakfast, a Mem-wha??" and a good part of the second chapter is devoted to me!
Christine tells the story of how, in 2004, at a Merkin Hall concert for Bob Sherman's radio show Woody's Children, which had a stellar lineup featuring Pete Seeger, Tom Chapin, Christine and others, she had me fill in at the last minute for Odetta and Oscar Brand who were no-shows. I had attending the first half of the concert, and when I ran into her at intermission, Chrstine had the idea of bringing me up onstage to sing Dog on the Moon" since there was extra time. I said yes, but inwardly panicked because I didn't have my guitar with me. Since I only play left-handed guitar and there were only right-handed guitars on stage, borrowing one was not an option. I decided to play the song on piano, even though I had never played it on that instrument before. I successfully transposed "Dog" on the spot, and the song was a big success that night.
You can read about it all in Christine's Book, which is smart of funny, and a great read. She really knows how to tell a story.
Thank you Christine for documenting what was one of the most exciting nights of my life!
"Cold Pizza for Breakfast" is out now on Tell Me Press.
